The Center for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism is seeking proposals related to the broad areas of diabetes, obesity and metabolism. Projects can span the translational spectrum from issues that deal with populations, clinical science and basic science. We are particularly interested in supporting projects in the realms of outcomes, prevention and population health.
Funds will be awarded for up to $5,000 to be spent within a maximum of 3 months from the date of award. One project will be awarded every two months, totaling six projects awarded each calendar year. The RFA is available here. Please contact Katelyn Still with questions.

Research Centers
An Institutionally-Supported Research Center is an interdepartmental unit focused predominantly on translational, clinical and/or basic science research which facilitates development of a common, focused research agenda aligned with strategic priorities, coordinating contributions from multiple disciplines (other centers, divisions/departments, and programs). We are pleased to announce the following opportunities are now available:
Research Centers – The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Research Centers support mature areas of research that reflect depth in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Research Centers here.
Emerging Research Centers - The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Emerging Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Emerging Research Centers support new ideas in need of investment for growth. The investment is intended to catalyze the formation of a team for the specific purpose of developing a strategic vision in order to grow a critical base of extramurally funded research. This research can be established in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Emerging Research Centers here.
Direct questions and applications to Lynne Wagenknecht, Vice Dean for Population Health Research, and/or Lindsay Trost, CTSI Administrative Director.

Errett Discovery Award
In honor of Daryl and Marguerite Errett, the Errett Fisher Foundation will fund The Daryl and Marguerite
Errett Discovery Award. This award will provide support for one Winston-Salem based outstanding postdoctoral fellow or early career faculty member annually so as to enable him/her to conduct leading edge research in biomedicine and launch promising projects that nurture the careers of gifted young investigators who will have an impact on pioneering developments that advance human health.
This $75,000 award is intended to supply seed funding to outstanding scientists who seek to conduct risk-taking research that may not yet qualify for traditional sources of funding as an independent investigator from agencies like the National Institutes of Health. Faculty are not eligible if they are located outside of Winston-Salem, or are a principal investigator on an NIH award or other independent faculty awards; however, early career funding mechanisms from foundations and industry are acceptable. This may include funding from NIH such as K-Awards, American Heart Association, etc.
Department Chairs and Section Heads are invited to nominate their most outstanding postdoctoral fellows or early career faculty members located in Winston-Salem, who have the potential to conduct leading-edge research in the biomedical research field. More than one nomination is allowed. The deadline for internal applications is Friday, September 13, 2024. See the RFA for additional information. Click here to apply.
SENS Research Foundation
SENS Research Foundation is pleased to offer the Degenerative Aging Process Research Center Grant. SENS Research Foundation was founded to catalyze progress in the “damage-repair” approach for medical intervention in degenerative aging, and we will only fund proposals that clearly offer the potential to progress toward medical therapies using this approach. “Damage-repair” interventions are those that directly remove, repair, replace, or render harmless specific cellular and molecular “damage” in aging tissues. We will not fund proposals aimed toward therapies that modulate metabolic pathways as their approach. This eliminates most interventions that could be achieved by small-molecule drugs, which inhibit or promote some targeted pathway of metabolism. Indeed, it rules out most medical therapies used in current clinical practice or in human clinical trials today. Instead, a “damage-repair” proposal will clearly lead toward the direct removal or repair of some form of aging damage, which generally entails delivering some novel capacity that the organism does not intrinsically have as part of normal metabolism.
For more information and eligibility requirements, visit the website. The deadline is August 1, 2024.

ARPA-H Launches Program to Shed Light on Invisible Health Challenges
The BREATHE (Building Resilient Environments for Air and Total Health) program, led by Program Manager Jessica Green, aims to drive the next generation of smart buildings to ensure indoor air is always safe and healthy.
Why it matters:
• Poor indoor air quality is a leading cause of preventable diseases like the flu and other respiratory illnesses. Airborne disease-causing pathogens and allergens can have a significant effect on people’s health, especially children, the elderly, and those living with chronic illnesses or are otherwise susceptible.
To learn more about the program, visit the BREATHE program page.
NeuroNEXT Grant
The NeuroNEXT Network is designed to efficiently conduct Phase II Clinical Trials. NeuroNEXT Network is now accepting proposals. Applications for exploratory clinical trials of investigational agents (drugs, biologics, surgical therapies or devices) that may contribute to the justification for and provide the data required for designing a future trial, for biomarker validation studies, or for proof of mechanism clinical studies are encouraged. Successful applicants will be given access to the NeuroNEXT infrastructure to support the efficient implementation of the proposed study at multiple sites and statistical and data management.
If you are interested, please schedule a meeting to discuss your proposal with the NeuroNEXT Study Team. This opportunity is ongoing until 2028.
