Protect Your REDCap Project and Data

See How Moving Your Project to Production Adds Important Safeguards

July 28, 2026

When a project is in Production status, additional protections are put in place. If you submit changes that could impact existing data, REDCap sends a request to the REDCap team for review and approval. This gives us an opportunity to discuss the proposed changes with you, ensure there are no unintended consequences, and, if necessary, reject changes that could compromise your data.

Projects in production are also protected by our backup and disaster recovery processes. In the event of an unexpected system issue, production projects are included in our backup protections, helping to ensure your data can be recovered.

Don’t worry, you can still make changes to your project after it has been moved to production. Simply place the project into draft mode, make your updates, and submit them for review. If the changes do not affect existing data or create any breaking issues, they are often approved automatically.

Benefits of production status:

  • Additional safeguards for data integrity
  • Review of potentially data-impacting changes
  • Protection through backup and disaster recovery processes
  • Continued ability to make project updates through Draft Mode

If your project is ready for data collection, consider moving it to production today.
