Since opening in May 2025, Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s Preclinical Imaging and Irradiation (PRIMIR) facility has become a key resource for biomedical research. Partially funded by an NIH ORIP construction grant, the facility brings advanced imaging and technologies together in one location, helping accelerate scientific discovery. PRIMIR is already supporting collaborations with institutions including Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University.
The facility features major technologies that support research in a number of areas. Current research projects are examining conditions such as brain aging, Alzheimer’s disease detection and the effects of cocaine use disorder. Researchers are also exploring the use of artificial intelligence and advanced laboratory models to support innovative biomedical research. In addition to research, the facility provides hands-on training for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, interns and medical physics trainees, helping prepare the next generation of biomedical scientists.
Looking ahead, Wake Forest plans to expand PRIMIR with additional advanced technology, which, along with research partnerships and training opportunities, will help drive new discoveries and strengthen biomedical research at Wake Forest and beyond.
