Dr. Jaime Hughes and Team’s WalkOn! Program Takes Strides Forward Receiving an Outstanding Award: A Wake Forest CTSI Pilot Success Story

July 1, 2025

Jaime Hughes, PhD, MPH, MSW, Barb Nicklas, PhD, and team are making a difference in the lives of older adults, including those living in rural communities. WalkOn!, a group-based walking program, has shown to be an effective way to improve physical, cognitive, and social health.

Originally supported by funding from The Duke Endowment and, more recently, the Wake Forest CTSI’s 2024-2025 Science of Translation Pilot Award, WalkOn! has grown into a powerful initiative. Now, thanks to a new two-year award from the National Council on Aging and the Administration for Community Living Innovation Lab, the program is predicted to see even more growth. WalkOn! aims to combat inactivity and social isolation among older adults, especially in resource-limited rural areas. Over the past year, the team cultivated new collaborations with unique organizations throughout the Triad and Western North Carolina, listening to older adults and community leaders alike about how WalkOn! might be adapted to better fit local needs, preferences, and capacity. In their new award, the team will track outcomes like time spent outside the home and community activity days to measure the impact of WalkOn!. As the program moves into spaces like churches and libraries, its impact will go beyond just walking. The program strengthens social connections, reduces the risk of falls, and helps older adults live healthier, more independent lives.

This is an exciting example of how research and community-driven solutions can address healthcare gaps. Dr. Jaime Hughes and team are setting a powerful example of what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. One step at a time, WalkOn! is changing lives and breaking down barriers, paving the way for healthier communities.
