Mission
The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) provides space, bionutrition, laboratory, and patient care services for approved studies. The CRU's main location is on the first floor of the Sticht Center for Aging. CRU staff work closely with investigators and their study teams to provide high-quality services for all types of studies including industry, federal, and investigator initiated sponsored research.

CRU Bionutrition services support WFBH researchers with the design, planning, and implementation of any nutrition components within their research protocols. Our staff and facilities include Registered Dietitians (RDs) with extensive research experience and a fully-staffed Metabolic Kitchen. The following services are provided.
Food Service
- Research diet development, analysis, and preparation
- Computer-assisted menu planning for controlled-nutrient, weighed, and metabolic diets
- On-site and pack-out research diet feeding
- Recipe development
- Computer-assisted food weigh-back system
- Aliquot preparation for meal assays
- Doubly-labeled water testing
- Food sampling to support nutrition counseling themes
- Healthy snacks for fasting visits
Metabolic Assessment
- Anthropometric body measurements
- Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) measurement
- Indirect calorimetry (RMR) testing
- Dietary intake data collection and analysis from dietary recalls or food records using Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) software
- Nutrition screening and evaluation for feeding study eligibility
- Nutritional status and dietary history assessments
- Dietary compliance monitoring and assessment
- Vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplement intake assessment
- Food frequency questionnaire administration and analysis
Nutrition Education
- Nutrition education and counseling by Registered Dietitians
- Development of protocol-specific educational materials
- Development, implementation, and analysis of self-monitoring tools
Additional Support Services
- Consultation for development of nutrition components for grant applications and publications
- Collaboration with research team to develop nutrition-related research forms
- Student/intern training
The CRU laboratory staff provide consultation on specimen collection and testing procedures as well as processing of blood, saliva, sputum, urine, and fecal specimens. The laboratory is equipped with -70 and -20 freezers, refrigerators, refrigerated centrifuges, micro-centrifuges, micropipettes, and a biological safety cabinet (A2) hood. All freezers, refrigerators and ambient temperatures are monitored 24 hours a day via SPOT system. All Laboratory Technicians have completed CITI and GCP training.

- IV Glucose Tolerance Testing and Oral Glucose Tolerance Testing
- Non-Waived Testing (YSI 2300 STAT Plus Glucose Analyzer)
- Waive Testing (HemoPoint and Urine Pregnancy)
- Real Time Results Reporting for glucose, hemoglobin and hematocrit.
- Pharmacokinetic (PK) and Pharmacodynamic (PD) Specimen Processing
- Preparation and Routing of Specimens for Immediate Analysis
- Preservation and shipment of Specimens for Transport, Ambient, Refrigerated, and Frozen on Dry Ice
- Processing of Blood, CSF, Sputum, Saliva, Urine, and Feces.
- Storage and shipment of pre-cut Tissue samples.
- Short-Term Repository Storage
- Validation of Point of Care Testing Instruments, Including Development of QC and QA Programs
Dry Ice CRU In-House Purchase:
Thank you for your interest in purchasing dry ice. The cost per kg is $3.22 for industry studies and $2.22 for all other studies. You can pick up the dry ice in the Clinical Research Unit, Main Floor Progressive Care Building. We require a 24 hour notice prior to pick-up. We do understand that circumstances may arise that you need dry ice ASAP so please call 336-716-9752 to make sure we have enough in stock.

Please note if you need more than 10lbs of dry ice delivered your request will need to go through purchasing to Airgas. We do not deliver. Our CRU dry ice service is a courtesy for clinical trials that need small quantities to ship samples.
