Utilizing 3D-Printed Orbital Floor Stamps to Create Patient-Specific Implants for Orbital Floor Reconstruction

We used 3D-printing techniques to generate stamps that mimic a patient's non-traumatized orbital floor to better shape the implants to accurately mimic their native orbital floor. We tested this on four patients and tracked their outcomes for resolution of their preoperative symptoms.

  • What inspires you to do research?
Research is another way to learn about a field of interest and for me, that was plastic surgery. Through research, I've been able to explore the questions within the field and be part of projects that help answer some of those questions.
  • Where do you hope to do your residency and why?
I've been in North Carolina my whole life so I'm thinking I may want to go out to California for residency to get a change of scenery and culture change. That being said, all my family is in Winston-Salem and Raleigh so staying in the South is definitely on the table. At the end of the day, I'm going to rank the program that would provide me the best training and resources to succeed in my chosen specialty.
  • Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I have a bullet smoker at home so prior to coming to medical school, I would churn out briskets, ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken wings, and all the fixins' on the weekends for friends and family.
