Wake Forest CTSI Workforce Development Program Sparks Growth, Learning, and Lasting Impact

Highlights from Recent Leadership in Focus Series

August 19, 2025

In the changing landscape of medical research, strong leadership is essential to navigate challenges. This need inspired the creation of "Leadership in Focus" by the Wake Forest Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Workforce Development Program. This series aims to highlight various leadership traits for a broader research community.

In its first sessions, Leadership in Focus showcased experienced leaders from Wake Forest University School of Medicine discussing key leadership traits, strategies for managing change, and the essence of being a strategic leader. Dr. Amy Wallis, a professor of organizational behavior and ethics at Wake Forest University School of Business, facilitated these interviews with Dr. Jamy Ard, Dean Ebony Boulware, and Dr. Julie Freischlag. Each leader shared their journey to leadership, including important turning points and lessons learned along the way.

Leadership in Focus provides valuable insights for anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills, including:

  • Effective self-advocacy and how to advocate for others at the right moments
  • The value of mentorship
  • Being approachable while ensuring accountability
  • Making decisions based on your core values
  • Adapting to change and building resilience

The fall series will feature sessions on Team Science, aiming to provide valuable insights on collaboration.
