From Aquaporins to Acute Stroke:
Lessons Learned in my Journey as a Researcher
Andrew Asimos, MD, FACEP
Professor of Emergency Medicine
Medical Director, Atrium Health Stroke Network
As an emergency medicine physician with over 30 years of experience and a research focus on neurological emergencies, my academic career has centered on improving regionalized acute stroke care. I’ll share key lessons from this journey.
After spending two years in the Nobel Prize-winning lab of Dr. Peter Agre at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Asimos attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. For more than three decades, Dr. Asimos has been a proud member of the emergency medicine faculty at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he also serves as Medical Director of the Atrium Health Stroke Network. His contributions to medical education have been recognized with the National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Career Excellence in Medical Education Award from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. In 2021, he received the Established Investigator Award for Clinical/Population Research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
