Dr. Kaelin’s pioneering discovery of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability has transformed medicine, paving the way for groundbreaking treatments for cancer, anemia, and other diseases. In his keynote address, he will share highlights from his career journey, exploring the intricate mechanisms of cellular oxygen sensing and the far-reaching impact of his research.
Dr. Kaelin is the Sidney Farber Professor of Medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He earned his MD from Duke University, completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as chief medical resident, and trained as a clinical fellow in Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
A leading figure in cancer research, Dr. Kaelin has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the Canada Gairdner International Award, and the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. His work on tumor-suppressor genes has been instrumental in developing new therapies, including VEGF inhibitors and the first HIF2 inhibitor for kidney cancer treatment. His discoveries extend beyond cancer, offering critical insights into conditions such as anemia, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
