The ARP operates in accordance with standards and regulations of the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which administers the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). This law provides for the humane care and treatment of animals bred for commercial sale, transported in commerce, used in biomedical research, and exhibited to the public.
In addition, ARP operates in accordance with The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), which provides guidance and interpretation of the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Policy), supports educational programs, and monitors compliance with the Policy by Assured institutions and PHS funding components to ensure the humane care and use of animals in PHS-supported research, testing, and training, thereby contributing to the quality of PHS-supported activities.
Wake Forest University has been accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International ) since 1966.
