Writing Scientific Introductions

The first paragraph in a grant application or manuscript sets the tone for the entire document and must convince readers of the importance of your work. Dr. Douglas Lyles, Professor of Biochemistry, explains three principles of writing strong scientific introductions. First, start with a dramatic statement that all will agree with. Second, move from familiar to new, tracing the shortest logical path to your proposed work. Third, state the purpose of your project in the most intellectually aggressive manner possible.
