This interactive 3-part workshop will introduce participants to using electronic health record (EHR) data for their research. Each session will be a combination of didactic instruction and interactive focus work. This mini-course is open to any Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist faculty member, trainee, or staff member interested in pursuing EHR-based research; junior faculty are especially encouraged to attend.
Session 1: EHR data basics in research – led by Dr. Kristina Lewis
JUNE 14th, 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM
This session will cover:
· EHR basics / Introduction to working with EHR data – pros, cons and key differences from traditional “research grade” data
· Participants will learn about the potential for EHR related research through the presentation of a successful project conducted by our own investigators (Presentation by Dr. Michael Bancks and Dr. Joseph Rigdon)
Participants will be asked to create and submit project ideas by June 24th
Session 2: Accessing EHR data for research – led by Dr. Brian Wells
JUNE 28th, 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM
This session will cover:
· An overview of Wake Forest’s data resources
· IRB requirements for EHR-based research
· Requesting data extraction through the CTSI
· Whole class workshop on specific research questions
Session 3: Clinical applications and innovations in EHR data research – led by Dr. Alysha Taxter
JULY 12th, 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM
This session will cover:
· Clinical application and innovation in EHR data research
· Presentation by Dr. Kimberly Montez
· Brief Q&A (covers the whole course)
· Review of the mini-pilot application
· Participants will prepare a pilot grant application to fund their research
Following completion of the workshop, at least 1 mini-pilot award will be given to one of the project ideas originating from the course. The small pilots (up to $3,000 each) will cover project costs.
