Required Chemical Inventory Deadline Past Due

Required Chemical Inventory Deadline Past Due

This affects School of Medicine faculty and laboratory managers.

Situation

The Chemical Safety Committee (CSC) in conjunction with the WFBH Environmental Health and Safety Department are collecting chemical inventories which are now required for all research and laboratory areas where chemicals are present.

Background

In October and December of 2018, information was distributed from the Chemical Safety Committee regarding the requirement that each research laboratory create a chemical inventory. A SharePoint website was developed to store chemical inventories. This SharePoint website will serve as a repository of chemical information for researchers in the School of Medicine and will facilitate collaboration between departments and compliance with the Winston-Salem fire marshal and institutional requirements.

Assessment

Five pieces of information are required to complete an inventory:

  1. Reagent name
  2. CAS number
  3. Bottle size
  4. Bottle location (room#/Bay/shelf/flammables cabinet/acids cabinet/etc.)
  5. Reagent vendor

All chemical reagents, solvents, fixatives, and defined chemical substances are to be included within this list. All commercially purchased chemical products need to be listed on the chemical inventory. Novel chemical entities (NCEs) that are synthesized in the course of a research program and biological agents, i.e. antibodies, proteins, enzymes, DNA/RNA, and plasmids are not to be included in the chemical inventory.

Recommendations

Please send your chemical inventory (Excel spreadsheet) to EHSchem@wakehealth.edu. The deadline was December 31, 2018 so all inventories are past due and need to be submitted as soon as feasibly possible.

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) will perform the initial entry of data into the Chemical Inventory SharePoint website and then grant access to contributors for maintenance of chemical inventories.

Questions can be directed to the Chemical Safety Committee (EHSchem@wakehealth.edu) or Environmental Health & Safety (EHS@wakehealth.edu) at 336-716-9375.
