Wake forest ADRC REC Scholar
We are pleased to announce the funding cycle for this year’s Research Education Component (REC) Scholarships from the Wake Forest Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (WF ADRC); funding will be available in July 2024. The main priorities of the program are for REC Scholars to build skills in Translational Science and Team Science in the field of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD). The WF ADRC encourages applications related to the scientific focus of the Center, which investigates the link between metabolic and vascular diseases and the transitions from normal aging to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to AD and related disorders. Scholar funding can be used for educational opportunities, research support, as well as travel to National ADRC meetings and scientific conferences.
The RFA can be found here. The application deadline has been extended to 5/3/2024, 11:59 PM. Please email Dr. Sharon Letchworth or Dr. Tina Brinkley if you have questions.
Wake Forest Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC)
The Wake Forest Pepper Pilot Studies Program promotes promising new research ideas by providing funds for generation of preliminary data for development of grant applications leading to external funding of larger, definitive studies. This year’s theme is “Integrating pathways affecting physical function for new approaches to disability treatment and prevention.” The overall objective is to promote translational research to assess biological, behavioral, cognitive, genomic, metabolic, and other factors which contribute to age-related physical function decline, or progression to disability.
Key goal: Facilitating the development and testing in clinical/pre-clinical studies of novel interventions targeting age-related decline in physical function to prevent/reverse progression to disability. The program funds full pilot studies, proposals with plans to add measures to existing studies, and exploratory analyses of existing databases and archived biofluid and tissue samples.
Innovative, multidisciplinary, geroscience-based, and translational approaches are encouraged, as are involvement of junior faculty as well as faculty from outside fields interested in aging research.

Research Centers
An Institutionally-Supported Research Center is an interdepartmental unit focused predominantly on translational, clinical and/or basic science research which facilitates development of a common, focused research agenda aligned with strategic priorities, coordinating contributions from multiple disciplines (other centers, divisions/departments, and programs). We are pleased to announce the following opportunities are now available:
Research Centers – The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Research Centers support mature areas of research that reflect depth in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Research Centers here.
Emerging Research Centers - The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Emerging Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Emerging Research Centers support new ideas in need of investment for growth. The investment is intended to catalyze the formation of a team for the specific purpose of developing a strategic vision in order to grow a critical base of extramurally funded research. This research can be established in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Emerging Research Centers here.
Direct questions and applications to Lynne Wagenknecht, Vice Dean for Population Health Research, and/or Lindsay Trost, CTSI Administrative Director.

Cures within Reach
The Cures within Reach Foundation is pleased to announce that applications for the Clinical Repurposing Research to Impact Veterans/Military 2024 LOI are now open. This RFP is seeking clinical repurposing trials from US-based research institutions using already approved treatments to address unmet and high-priority medical needs of US veterans and/or active US military, such as mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries.
Our strongest preference is for proof of concept, pivotal, Phase I or Phase IIA clinical repurposing trials. Clinical trials utilizing telehealth or other decentralized / remote strategies are encouraged to apply. Repurposed therapies must be approved and/or generally recognized as safe for human use by some regulatory agency, such as the US Food and Drug Administration, European Medicines Agency, Health Canada or Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, and may include drugs, devices, nutraceuticals, diagnostics or cellular/gene therapies, as well as combination therapies. These repurposed therapies must be tested in a new indication for which they are not already approved or used widely in the clinic as standard of care.
For PIs who are interested in including underserved patients (as defined by the NIH) in the proposed clinical trial, CWR may provide an optional $5,000 - $15,000 in additional financial support for approved community engagement costs. Interested PIs may include any ideas and/or plans for engagement / collaborations with community-based organizations to engage underserved communities in the clinical trial. However, community engagement is not required, and community engagement costs should not be included in the requested funding amount submitted to CWR in the LOI. If a clinical trial is selected for funding, CWR will contact the PI about potential community engagement.
More information is available here. The LOI submission deadline is 11:59PM ET on May 8, 2024. Questions can be directed to Joanna Yu, JD or Jessica Vaughn.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is pleased to announce that applications for the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars are now open. Scholars will be outstanding basic researchers, including physician-scientists, who have strong potential to become leaders in their fields and to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion through their mentoring efforts and understanding of systemic exclusion and marginalization in science of trainees from different backgrounds. Scholars will prioritize scientific excellence in their own research while creating an inclusive lab climate that serves as a model within their own institutions and beyond. Eligible research areas are in the biological and biomedical sciences and include many scientific disciplines in a wide range of organisms. Scholars will be employed by HHMI and will maintain an academic appointment and lab at their research institution. Scholars will be required to spend at least 80% of their time on their research.
More information, including eligibility requirements, can be found here. Applications are due May 15th at 3PM ET. Those interested in applying or with questions regarding the application process should contact the Foundation Relations team.
