The Cardiovascular Sciences Center (CVSC) is seeking proposals for projects in need of support to promote new areas or technologies for cardiovascular research (basic, clinical, population), as well as to foster collaborative efforts or new collaborations. The goal of the pilot project is to allow investigators to pursue novel and innovative ideas that will improve the likelihood of obtaining extramural funding. The funding is also meant to allow investigators to perform critical experiments, access core facilities or improve analyses that address specific critiques raised by reviewers for extramural funding.
Successful pilots will receive up to $20,000 to be spent within a 12-month project period. Completed applications are due March 30, 2024 by 11:59PM. Click here to view the full RFA. To apply, click here.
AHWFB Comprehensive Cancer Center (AHWFBCCC) is soliciting applications for pilot research funding from junior faculty members (within 6 years after faculty appointment). The intention of this RFA, funded by the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS-IRG), is to promote innovative cancer research by supporting the initiation of cancer research projects by providing seed money to junior faculty who are planning to work on cancer related projects. Prior experiences in cancer research are not essential.

LAUNCH
The Wake Forest University School of Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), co-sponsored by Advocate Enterprise Population Health Services, is pleased to announce our LAUNCH RFA. This is our Annual innovation incubator, competition, and accelerator for innovative solutions and enablement strategies to impact patient reported outcomes related to healthcare access specifically getting timely and needed care. Innovative solutions need to be focused on at least one of the following areas:
• Getting Timely Care, Appts & Information: Refers to a practice’s ability to quickly provide care after recognizing a need. The timelier a provider, the better their patients’ health outcomes — and levels of engagement.
• Getting Needed Care: The Getting Needed Care measure evaluates patients' satisfaction with how easy it was for them to get needed care and see specialists. This is self-reported by patients and collected annually as part of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers Systems (CAHPS®) Survey.
Any group within the Advocate Health System may apply. Teams are encouraged to include individuals with varying functional areas of expertise and different markets. For example, medical providers and trainees, advanced care providers, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, allied health professionals, data scientists, implementation scientists, business manager, etc. If selected for the final competition phase, 3 of the team members will represent the team at the Launch 2024 finals in Milwaukee, WI, October 11-13th.
Project ideas should be generalizable beyond the specific location of the team members to address larger health system opportunities related to patient outcomes. Project idea examples include (but are not limited to) developing an app, determining a new application of technology, implementing a care model to increase efficiency for clinicians, etc. Applications should be submitted via the REDCap form by April 12, 2024, at 11:59pm. Click here to apply.
Research Centers
An Institutionally-Supported Research Center is an interdepartmental unit focused predominantly on translational, clinical and/or basic science research which facilitates development of a common, focused research agenda aligned with strategic priorities, coordinating contributions from multiple disciplines (other centers, divisions/departments, and programs). We are pleased to announce the following opportunities are now available:
Research Centers – The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Research Centers support mature areas of research that reflect depth in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Research Centers here.
Emerging Research Centers - The purpose of this RFA is to invite applications to develop an Institutionally-Supported Advocate Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine Emerging Research Center. This document also provides the framework for a renewal application of an existing center. Emerging Research Centers support new ideas in need of investment for growth. The investment is intended to catalyze the formation of a team for the specific purpose of developing a strategic vision in order to grow a critical base of extramurally funded research. This research can be established in translational, clinical and/or basic science research. View the full RFA for Emerging Research Centers here.
Direct questions and applications to Lynne Wagenknecht, Vice Dean for Population Health Research, and/or Lindsay Trost, CTSI Administrative Director.

Cures within Reach
The Cures within Reach Foundation is pleased to announce that applications for the Clinical Repurposing Research to Impact Veterans/Military 2024 LOI are now open. This RFP is seeking clinical repurposing trials from US-based research institutions using already approved treatments to address unmet and high-priority medical needs of US veterans and/or active US military, such as mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries.
Our strongest preference is for proof of concept, pivotal, Phase I or Phase IIA clinical repurposing trials. Clinical trials utilizing telehealth or other decentralized / remote strategies are encouraged to apply. Repurposed therapies must be approved and/or generally recognized as safe for human use by some regulatory agency, such as the US Food and Drug Administration, European Medicines Agency, Health Canada or Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, and may include drugs, devices, nutraceuticals, diagnostics or cellular/gene therapies, as well as combination therapies. These repurposed therapies must be tested in a new indication for which they are not already approved or used widely in the clinic as standard of care.
For PIs who are interested in including underserved patients (as defined by the NIH) in the proposed clinical trial, CWR may provide an optional $5,000 - $15,000 in additional financial support for approved community engagement costs. Interested PIs may include any ideas and/or plans for engagement / collaborations with community-based organizations to engage underserved communities in the clinical trial. However, community engagement is not required, and community engagement costs should not be included in the requested funding amount submitted to CWR in the LOI. If a clinical trial is selected for funding, CWR will contact the PI about potential community engagement.
More information is available here. The LOI submission deadline is 11:59PM ET on May 8, 2024. Questions can be directed to Joanna Yu, JD or Jessica Vaughn.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is pleased to announce that applications for the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars are now open. Scholars will be outstanding basic researchers, including physician-scientists, who have strong potential to become leaders in their fields and to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion through their mentoring efforts and understanding of systemic exclusion and marginalization in science of trainees from different backgrounds. Scholars will prioritize scientific excellence in their own research while creating an inclusive lab climate that serves as a model within their own institutions and beyond. Eligible research areas are in the biological and biomedical sciences and include many scientific disciplines in a wide range of organisms. Scholars will be employed by HHMI and will maintain an academic appointment and lab at their research institution. Scholars will be required to spend at least 80% of their time on their research.
More information, including eligibility requirements, can be found here. Applications are due May 15th at 3PM ET. Those interested in applying or with questions regarding the application process should contact the Foundation Relations team.
W.M. Keck Foundation
