SMART IRB: Spread the Word!
SMART IRB, which stands for the "Streamlined, Multisite, Accelerated Resources for Trials," was designed to streamline the IRB review process for multisite studies. SMART IRB is a result of the collaboration between CTSA Program hubs to develop a Common Reciprocal Institutional Review Board Authorization Agreement (SMART IRB Agreement) to help facilitate the NIH single IRB (sIRB) policy.
The NIH sIRB policy applies to intramural multi-site studies submitted for initial review after January 25, 2018. The sIRB policy was established to accelerate the ethical review of non-exempt human research through a single Institutional Review Board and reduce inefficiencies.
Participating SMART IRB institutions may allow one study institution to become the reviewing IRB for the study, while the other institutions 'rely' on that IRB's oversight, from initial review to study closeout. An online reliance system provides SMART IRB participating institutions and their investigators with a centralized system to request, track, and document reliance arrangements on a study-by-study basis.
