Community Tour

Building bridges between the academic medical center and the surrounding community.

Every day, over 2,000 members of our community come to Wake Forest Baptist Health as patients or participants in research. How many of their stories do you know? Are you familiar with the neighborhoods where they live? Do you know the obstacles they encounter in accessing our medical center? If you are a clinician, what happens to carefully crafted treatment plans after patients leave the hospital? If you are a researcher, would deeper appreciation of the surrounding community help you more effectively engage community members in research?

One of the goals of the PCER is to build bridges between the academic medical center and the surrounding community, with a focus on populations who have been historically marginalized.

The Community Tour is designed to help faculty, staff and administrators gain an expanded understanding of:

  • Health disparities within the local community
  • Critical social determinants of health, e.g., access to care, housing, transportation, education, food environment, employment, and poverty
  • Resources and protective factors that promote community resilience
  • History of healthcare and research in the local community
